I write more or less exclusively about finance on this blog. And I certainly don?t write very often about advertising or marketing. However, I felt that I, for once, had to make an exception (or almost an exception since this blog is about marketing in finance).

Among all capitalistic market enthusiasts out there I think I hate commercials more than anyone else! Particularly audio/video-commercials. I have developed a fantastic ability to filter out commercials from the actual program and this probably makes me a really bad marketer. At least of consumer products. I do like quality commercials in ?glossy? magazines such as Vogue, How to spend it, DI Weekend, Monocle, though, and sometimes I even get caught by newspaper commercials. Enters this blog entry!

The old British bank Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, better known as HSBC is a bank that I have always been impressed by (except when they didn?t hire me as a political analyst back in the 90s….). They have fared quite well during this crisis and just a couple of weeks ago they relocated their main office from London to Hong Kong (which I also like)!

OK, what?s my point? Well, I just wanted to show you a really nice commercial (click on the picture below) by a really nice bank. Remember, HSBC is one of the truly global banks in the world. Their logo (the red/white thing) is also very well known around the world. That?s important to know in order to appreciate the ad.

If I were the CEO of HSBC I would either promote the guy who came up with the idea or subscribe to the services of the advertising agency who did. As I said above, I am by no means an expert on advertising, but I would really like to know who is behind the ad and buy some call options on their stock….
